fender

July 8, 2009

Yesterday during my drive home for my lunchbreak I got in a fender bender. A guy in the lane to the right of me merged into my lane and didn’t see me. He was driving a big work truck so I was EXTREMELY lucky when I got out of my car and realized that he had only gotten my rear view mirror. No scratches on the car, just the mirror broke off.

This morning I read a post from Zen Habits. It was called “love life, not stuff”. It really helped me put things into perspective. The last paragraph was what really stood out to me.

Realize that life, not stuff, is what matters. Objects are just objects — if you lose them, if they get stolen or destroyed … it’s not a big deal. They’re just objects — not your life. Your life is the series of moments that is steaming through your consciousness right now, and how you use those moments and what you fill them with is what truly matters, not what you fill your home with. At the end of this short journey, you’ll look back and remember your experiences, the people you loved and who loved you back, the things you did and didn’t do. Not the stuff you had. ”

This is an amazing website that you should all take a look at. It always helps to have a positive voice out there and these posts always brighten my day. It helps you take a step back and figure out what is really important in your life.

anyhoo, thanks for the opinions on the necklaces. my mind keeps changing but i’ll let you know when i decide!

so the amazing miss Heather is a chia expert. I bought some chia seeds a while ago, used them once and kind of lost them in the pantry. I always see her use them in her oats, and was wondering what other kinds of uses she knew for the wonder seed. She suggested that I soak 2 tbsp of chia in my 1 c. of almond milk overnight and use this gel for my morning smoothie. I’ve been drinking green smoothies pretty religiously every morning but this factor took them to a whole new level. I used 1/2 banana, big handful spinach, 1 c. almond milk with 2 tbsp chia, a scoop of amazing grass green superfood, and some ice cubies. This thickened up my smoothie and made it taste like a milkshake. To add to the fact that it tasted even better, the craziest part is that it kept me full until lunch. Usually they keep me full for about 2 1/2 hours then I have a smaller morning snack around 9:30/10. But this one kept me satisfied till 12. Good fats people are what helps, and I have to thanks Heather for this one 🙂

Also, yesterday I dropped by Costco to pick up some spinach for my smoothies. I also got a HUGE box of vanilla organic soy milk. There are 12 containers in there. The almond milk I was buying was getting expensive. For a carton it is about $2.50 and for 12 of these it was $12.99. I love my almond milk, but my wallet loves this organic soy milk so much more! This thing was massive.

Tonight i’m going to the beginner vinyasa yoga class. Ah i’m so excited. I can’t even explain how sore the vinyasa class on Monday made me. Wow. It was incredible. I can already tell how much i’m going to love this yoga month. This is a local yoga studio that has a few different locations in the city. The rate that they have for an unlimited month is $150. When I went in to buy the membership they informed me that if you choose to go to a specific studio, the cost is only $109. $41 savings right there! I’m goign to use that to buy a new yoga mat 🙂 The studio opened up right across the street from my house so it’s incredibly convenient. They have so many different types of classes as well, so I can broaden my yoga horizons here.

I made it home safely for my lunch today and made a mexican scramble. I haven’t had one of these in foreverrrr. I got new tortillas yesterday at TJ’s. Spinach. I usually opt for ww, but they were out so I grabbed these suckers. They were delicious! I filled it up with onions, black beans, cumin, spinach, 2 eggs, and a wedge of laughing cow. Threw it on the foreman with some salsa on the side and I had a mexican fiesta on my plate.

Ugh, sorry about the accident! I hate those big trucks! Thanks for the web site suggestion though, I think we all need some more Zen in our lives!

Have fun at the Vinyasa class, I’m going tonight too! It kills me.

Are there really 12 containers of soymilk in there? When is the expiration date?!

  11. July 8, 2009 2:46 pm

Oh no! Sorry to hear about your fender bender, I’m ALWAYS SO freaked out about people merging in front of me!! Sounds like it wasn’t your fault though and I’m glad to hear you’re OK!

What a great perspective that quote gives, and it’s SO right, people put way too much emphasis on material objects!

  12. July 8, 2009 2:51 pm

yikes sorry about the fender bender! glad it wasn’t too bad — those types of things can be super scary! I can’t imagine watching a big 18 wheeler merging in to my lane, YIKES! I hope he pays for the damages!!

that message is spot on — I definitely feel as though people (and i’ll be honest, myself as well) get far too consumed in the material aspects of our orld and lose sight of how precious friendships, love, etc. are.. permanent things. Material things come and go, they’re temporary.. friends and family are forever 🙂 thanks for the reminder!

    enjoy your class tonight!!

  13. July 8, 2009 3:02 pm

i’ve had some chia sitting around for months too…thanks for passing on a great idea for using them 🙂

will have to check out zen habits, i tend to have a really bad habit of hoarding stuff in my room and never cleaning up…ahh….

  14. July 8, 2009 6:01 pm

That’s too bad about your car, but at least you weren’t hurt. The car can always get fixed 🙂

I wonder why they don’t sell that Kirkland brand soymilk in Canada. I remember them having some once at one of the sample tables, but I’ve never seen it in the store since. So weird.

I am going to read more right after I post this comment! 🙂 I love inspirational quotes and messages like that..it really puts reality back in place and makes you remember what is important in our lives! Love love love it…almost as much as I love love love that spinach wrap!

  16. July 8, 2009 8:49 pm

I’m glad both you and your car are ok! Are you planning on getting you review mirror fixed soon? Are you paying for it, or do you know yet if your insurance? Either way, I’m glad it wasn’t something worse

    • July 10, 2009 9:04 am

He was driving a company car actually, so his company is going to have to pay for it. I filed a claim so i should be getting some information back soon! As soon as they call me back, im gonna get it fixed. Hard to parallel park in the city with no rear view mirror! haha

  17. July 8, 2009 9:15 pm

so glad you’re ok!! i’ve been in wrecks like that too and they are no fun, plus terrifying!

    enjoy the yoga class!!

  18. July 8, 2009 9:31 pm

So sorry about the fender bender, but I’m really glad you’re ok. That must have been really scary! I love your quote from the Zen website..that’s a really good life mantra. People matter so much more than things.

I really want to try chia seeds! Especially if they made your smoothie taste like a milkshake, yum! 🙂

  21. July 8, 2009 10:53 pm

Hi Ash!! Oh man i’m so glad you were ok!! Driving is one of those crazy things where it’s not enough to be a good driver yourself – you never know what kind of people are out there on the streets!!

I’m SO happy that you shared that excerpt. I’m gonna go read up on the site because recently I’ve been going through some stuff that makes those words seem SO real and SO relatable. It’s also SO right…in the end it’s the people that matter, not the things. 🙂 Thank you for posting!!!
